Memorial Day weekend is a time for fun cookouts, family gatherings, and enjoying the start of summer with the people — and pets — you love most. At Village Animal Hospital, we want to make sure every member of your family stays safe and happy this holiday. Here’s what every pet owner in our community should keep in mind before the long weekend begins.
Watch the Table Scraps
It’s tempting to share food with our pets during cookouts, but many human treats can be dangerous. A few common culprits to watch for:
Corn on the Cob: Dogs love sneaking these chewy delights, but the cob can be a major hazard. It doesn’t digest well and can lead to gastrointestinal blockages that often require emergency surgery.
Rich Meats: Fatty or heavily seasoned foods can upset your pet’s stomach or even cause pancreatitis, which can be painful and requires serious medical treatment.
Other Toxic Foods: Onions, grapes, alcohol, and other common cookout staples can be poisonous to pets.
If you are unsure whether a food is safe for your pet, do not hesitate to call our team at Village Animal Hospital before the holiday weekend. We are always happy to help.
Heat Safety
The long weekend often means sunny outdoor fun, but heat can be dangerous for pets too. Unlike humans, pets do not sweat efficiently, making it much harder for them to cool down.
- Always provide ample shade and fresh water.
- Limit outdoor time, especially for brachycephalic breeds like French Bulldogs, American Bulldogs, and Pugs. Their short snouts make it harder for them to pant and regulate body temperature.
Warning signs of overheating include excessive panting, drooling, restlessness or lethargy, and gums that appear bright red or bluish. If you suspect heat stroke, act quickly:
- Move your pet to a cool area immediately.
- Soak their paws and ear flaps with cool water.
- Direct a fan at them.
- Seek veterinary care right away.
If you have any concerns about your pet during or after the holiday, our team at Village Animal Hospital is here for you.
Fireworks and Loud Noises
Memorial Day celebrations often include fireworks, which can stress out many pets. Anxiety from loud noises increases the risk of pets running away or injuring themselves.
- Keep dogs secure on a leash or in a safely enclosed area.
- Provide a quiet, secluded space where they can retreat if they feel overwhelmed.
- If your pet has known noise sensitivities, talk to your veterinarian about possible stress or anxiety medications before the holiday.
Our team at Village Animal Hospital can help you find the right solution for your pet ahead of time. Reach out before the weekend so we can help you plan accordingly. By keeping an eye on what your pets eat, monitoring their time in the heat, and helping them feel safe during noisy celebrations, you can make sure everyone in your family enjoys Memorial Day weekend.
From all of us at Village Animal Hospital — have a safe and happy holiday!
